Job Description

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Academic Success, the Student Success Coach I works collaboratively with their assigned academic dean, students, faculty and staff to provide services to freshmen and sophomores within a specified academic school. The Student Success Coach I will promote student success by serving as a personal coach to students and by providing academic and career advising as well as intentional intervention to a specific cohort of students. They will be responsible for assisting students with creating and following academic and career plans as well as proactively providing early alert monitoring for students facing academic and personal difficulties. The Student Success Coach I will assist with creating an environment that is conducive for success through academic coaching interpersonal connections, soft skills development, resources and referrals.


Principal Duties/Responsibilities

  • Coach and provide guidance to students to ensure their success;
  • Assume the role of primary academic and career advisor/coach to an assigned school;
  • Develop and implement programs and services that will assist freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors with identifying and establishing a clearly defined pathway to career fields by aligning their majors;
  • Learn and use the Jenzabar and other electronic systems that house student data;
  • Become familiar with academic policies in the bulletin and Student Handbook;
  • Become well-versed in the vertical curriculums for majors, minors and degree programs within an assigned school;
  • Contribute to the overall success, retention and persistence of students through graduation and career placement;
  • Ensure a seamless transition of students with 45 or more earned semester hours to degree program admission and faculty advisement;
  • Create success plans for students facing SAP, dismissal or academic probation;
  • Initiate and maintain frequent contact with students to provide intensive follow up on a regular basis, discussing the students'' challenges and progress;
  • Maintain accurate and detailed contact notes, track performance, and develop reports on the academic success and graduation of students;
  • Work alongside departments such as Academic Affairs, Registrar, Information Technology, Retention, Financial Aid, Counseling Services and other stakeholders to ensure a seamless transition of students;
  • Provide services in accordance with students needs and organizational objectives, including but not limited to, career mentoring, shadow opportunities, networking receptions, internships/externships, career assessments, etc.;
  • Abide by FERPA policies as it relates to students' education records;
  • Foster collaborative partnerships between deans, faculty, staff and students;
  • Prepare and submit annual reports and assessments related to student post-graduation employment, internship experiences and organizational goals;
  • Remain abreast of national trends and best practices related to student academic and career paths through post-graduation;
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures to align with institutional protocols, calendaring and recommendations by National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) and National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE);
  • Attend staff meetings at the departmental and division level;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Academic Success.
Education & Experience Requirements
  • Master's degree in Counseling, Student Affairs/Student Personnel, Higher Education or related field preferred, but not required;
  • One to three years of experience in academic and/or career advising;
  • Comprehensive understanding of the role of academic and career advising in higher education;
  • A working knowledge of the HBCU population and working with students with diverse populations including work with students from underrepresented ethnic/racial groups, first-generation, low-income, non-traditionally aged college students and others.

  • Demonstrated ability to build rapport in developing meaningful relationships with students and colleagues;
  • Knowledge of Student Development Theories;
  • Ability to demonstrate ownership, accountability and teamwork;
  • Ability to focus on results and to commit to excellence;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Physical Requirements
  • May be susceptible to eyestrain, back discomfort, and hand/wrist problems due to long periods working on a computer;
  • Occasional stress may occur from volume and deadlines;
  • Demands normal manual dexterity and visual and auditory acuity;
  • Must be mobile throughout the campus;
  • May be some walking, standing, bending or carrying light items.
