Description/Job Summary


The MSP Student Success Coach is part of the team that promotes a positive and successful learning experience for students. To increase student retention, success, and completion, coaches will provide an extremely high level of customer service and support to students in the Mayor's Scholars Program with the knowledge and skills necessary to assist individuals through the application of positive behaviors, helping students become academically successful. This position provides academic support, mentoring, success skill development, and case management services to help students transition successfully from high school to college. Coaches work closely with faculty, staff, tutors, and program leadership to promote student engagement, persistence, and readiness for the fall semester.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • To support students of the Mayor's Scholars Program (MSP) for successful completion of the program, including mentoring and advising.
  • Ability to monitor student progress and engagement, identify at-risk students, and conduct proactive outreach and interventions.
  • Strong data literacy skills, including collecting, analyzing, and using data to evaluate student progress, inform interventions, and recommend program improvements.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports on student outcomes, coaching effectiveness, and engagement strategies.
  • Ability to plan and facilitate workshops, small group sessions, and activities that promote college readiness, academic success, wellness, and teamwork.
  • Knowledge and ability to provide academic support in core subject areas such as reading, writing, and math, with familiarity in program-specific coursework.
  • Cultural competence and the ability to effectively engage with diverse populations, analyze problems, and implement appropriate solutions using sound judgment.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to multitask, prioritize, and complete multiple projects with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment, including coordination with tutors, advisors, and faculty.
  • Ability to support daily program operations, including student check-in, supervision, and event coordination.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional engagement through participation in meetings, trainings, and team debriefs.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse student populations and maintain confidentiality.
  • At least two years of experience in advising, coaching, or counseling young adult learners in an educational setting.
  • Experience working with high school or college aged students in an educational, mentoring, or advising capacity.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree
  • Three years of experience providing college access and retention services to recent high school graduates, who are first generation college students.
  • Bilingual (English - Spanish) communication skills.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proficiency in current technology, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), databases, learning management systems (e.g., Canvas), internet navigation, and social media platforms.
  • Ability to manage a caseload of 60-90 students by:
    • Assessing academic readiness, needs, and barriers to success
    • Monitoring grades, attendance, and assignment completion
    • Providing coaching in organization, study skills, time management, and college navigation
    • Connecting students to academic and social-emotional supports (e.g., tutoring, mental health, disability services)
    • Serving as a liaison among students, faculty, and families as needed
